waitingforbrodot: I tried to explain the real story of Thanksgiving to my little cousin who just moved to America and is already getting fed this garbage in kindergarten. But it was just too dark, man. All I could say was, “Ya know… The pilgrims really weren’t all that nice to the Indians afterwards… That’s part of why there aren’t that many Native Americans in Massachusetts anymore.” (I did not want to tell her about the terrible plagues. We were doing coloring sheets together and I felt like that might ruin the mood.) She said, “When I go back to school, I’ve got to ask my teacher why she lied to us.” I said, “Well, ya know, you probably shouldn’t do that. Some people get very upset by the real story.” I feel like I did a good thing by telling her, but I mostly hope I didn’t do a bad thing by telling her. I may also have mentioned immigration restrictions against Koreans and how that’s the reason our grandfather had to come to America by way of Canada. Might have suggested a little racism was involved.
